Interview with Steven Schmitz

Steven Schmitz, more commonly known as Schmitty, was open to chatting over lunch today about how he views the sharks. After making sure he was not promoting the wings, his favorite NHL team, he conceeded to take an unbiased viewpoint on the current situation. Considering that most teams haven't played more than five games yet, we both agreed that it was entirely too early to go by the rosters to see who was good.

Q: Who do you view to be the sharks biggest threat in their Western Conference? And Why?
A: Most definitely the Colorado avalanche and the Detroit red wings. Well the avs gave the sharks a run for their money all ready smacking them around and winning in the Colorado's home opener 2-5. The wings are just flat out always a threat. Even though you may think I'm running an active bias for my favorite team, they do have all those Stanley cup appearances and a lot of them are the Wings taking home the trophy.

Q: Do you think that the sharks have any competition in the East? If so, who would it be?
A: Pittsburg and Washington are really racing to prove themselves the past few years as they have been appearing in the play-off ever since they acquired Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Those two teams always are tough in the Stanley Cup, seeing as the penguins beat the wings last year, even though I hate to admit it.

Q: Do you as a wings fan, see the sharks as a significant hurdle to overcome?
A: Schmitty smirked with a wide smile, since he knows we constantly make fun of eachother's teams. Even though I constantly slam your team, I do think that they will be the number one in the West again on the roster like last year. But in the play-offs I still think the final four will be the sharks taking on the wings and the penguins taking on the capitals. He smiled again, but you gotta know that I still think we'll beat you to get to the finals and beat whoever it is that is the final team in the Eastern Conference.

  1. Nice. I like how you got a viewpoint from a wings fan. It shows another angle. Separating the paragraphs was very good too. It helped ease the reading.

  2. My opinions are that in the West the team that will ultimately do extremely well this season against all teams is the Chicago Blackhawks. They have some of the best young talent in Kane, Towes, and a pretty solid and efficient D squad. Their only downside is that their goaltending has been mildly weak over the past few years, and they've acquired some talented goalies with an unfortunate track record.
There still are other teams out there that will do good, and I think that the Cyotes and Kings can end up being some major underdogs later in the season.

From the East, i wouldn't put it past the NY Rangers to do some major damage when it comes to late in the playoffs. They have an extremely solid goalie in Hen Lundquivst, and some mean forwards that can get the job done in both ends of the zone. Also, i think that the Captials will eventually make it to the finals, they are in a fairly easy division, which will lead to a relatively good playoff berth, they have the power to get it done, and slam it home. The Caps do need to change somethings, like take it easy on the penalties, they're taking way to many, and they need to focus a lot more on shot placements, they are getting the number of shots they want, but the quality and percentage shots are low.

As for the purpose of this blog, and the Sharks, They have a lot of work that needs to be done to fine tune their game, and make it unbeatable. Don't get me wrong, they have the best roster in the whole league talent wise with one of the greatest goalies, some of the best forwards, and big D. That's what it takes to win a championship, and when they get their lines rolling and producing, watch out! plus they have the playoff experience now, the president's trophy from last year, and a lot of new talented players that could be enough to get it done come playoff time.
